Very windy and cool today. We decided this morning to do some planning for the next leg. Ken did some reading on the Kenai Peninsular to see where to fish and what tours are available.
About noon we were going to take a Ranger hike, but the wind has gotten really strong so we’ll stay here and keep planning. Taking a break we drove to the commercial area of Denali. This is really all hotels, gift shops and tour offices mostly owned by the cruise lines. Naturally a stop for ice cream at the grocery store was in order. We parked in an overlook where we hoped to watch rafters come down the canyon on the Nenana River. Guess its too windy as all the rafts were up on shore.
Back at camp it was shower time ($4 each) and you get a towel too! The campsite is nice and our Golden Age Passes have really paid off. Our site was only $14 a night and not $28. There are benefits to being 60! If you are traveling the pass is a must.
I was curled on the couch reading when Ken whispered “look behind you slowly“. A huge moose was standing in the trees just outside the window about 50 feet away! Then we saw the calf and it was nursing. WOW! They moved slowly across the campsites and once she was a safe distance we went out and carefully took pictures. Later another huge moose came thru the same identical path - think it was the male. It was really great to see them so closely and they are Big! Now we know why there are signs all over the campground - “Caution - be alert, Grizzly in moose calving area.” We didn’t see any bears, but the calves are definitely there.
Later we cooked some of our King Salmon fillet on the grill with a maple syrup glaze - yum. We got ready to move out in the morning. We aren’t going very far tomorrow so we can take our time.
We loved our time in Denali. It is truly wild and pristine!
