Decided to take a ride on a little backroad Ken found on the map. He loves these! Down Rte 123 S we went to Rte 28 W. this is just beautiful scenery so if you are looking for shops this isn't for you! Stopped at a little restaurant and got sandwiches to go. We turned down Hurlbert Rd and went through a wooded area until we came to a little town (3 buildings). We passed Hulbert Lake. Books have been written about the beauty and wildlife here. It is a privately owned lake and reaches depths of 450 feet. The road turned into our backroad and of course eventually it turned to dirt. Not just any dirt, but "red" dirt. We drove for a while watching for wildlife and passed many little shacks. All of a sudden we saw this driveway with a sign that said "Ken-Chucky" Camp out in the middle of nowhere! This was perfect as our very good neighbor at home is Chuck. So feeling right at home we pulled in the driveway and had a picnic lunch (no one had been home there for some years by the look of it). It was so quiet the birds were singing and the wind through the pines was wonderful. After lunch we drove 5 more miles and ended up back on Rte 123 and headed back to camp.
Across from the entrance to camp was a little path that led to where Whitefish Bay meets the Tahquamenon River. We followed the path to check it out and saw two more Sandhill Cranes. It is still windy but the sun came out and we found a double bench. It looked comfy so we laid down on each side...OH OH.. fell asleep and woke up 30 minutes later.
Back to camp the "weekenders' are arrving... so much for peaceful beauty. It is still cold and windy so no campfire tonight.
